One of the main problems of the dense Caferağa neighborhood is the lack of an open public space. While the basketball court and the swimming pool in the program are designed on basement floors, the theater is raised, leaving all ground level free as a fluid public space. The circulation of two strong functions, urban culture and sports events, is separated by this level difference. Another chief intention is to protect the collective memory of the existing sports hall, cultural center and their secondary spaces. To achieve this, the famous ‘’Temel Baba’’ food stall is moved into the new building near the entrance of the sports hall and existing trees are preserved. In addition, the well-known cafereia is redesigned on the ground level facing the newly created square. Stairs leading to the doorways of apartments is a typical characteristic of the neighborhood and they are used as a gathering space fort he youth. Inspired by this, a new set of public stairs are designed, connecting the upper square and the cultural center entrance to the lower square and the Street. On the upper square, an additional semi-open space is built to host open-air cinema activities and other assemblies fort he çivil initiatives and activists of the neighborhood. While covering this semi-open space, the theatre hall itself stands in its monumental form. The facade looking over the square is transparently designed to display the cultural center to the public. The see-through facade is covered by curtains while a theatre play is going on, but rehearsals or an empty hall is open to public spectators.
